Geotechnical Engineer


Due to a continued success and a growing demand from our Clients, we are seeking an enthusiastic and driven Geotechnical Engineer to join our team of engineers in central London.

Ideally, the successful candidate will be a highly numerate and enthusiastic individual, with an advanced degree in Civil / Geotechnical / Foundation Engineering, Soil Mechanics or a suitable equivalent.

The Geotechnical Engineer will have a minimum of 2 - 3 years’ experience in geotechnical engineering and is willing to specialise in offshore foundation design and advanced soil mechanics. Applicants should be a member of a professional organisation with a commitment towards continuing professional development and actively working toward chartered engineer status.

Geotechnical Engineer

Essential Experience:

  • Conceptual foundation design.
  • Geotechnical input into tenders and proposal submissions.
  • Detailed foundation design e.g. scour analysis, axial and lateral pile capacity, drivability analysis.
  • Production of geotechnical documents such as desk study, interpretative and design reports and engineering specifications and drawings.
  • Experience with geotechnical / FEA software e.g. OPILE, GRLWEAP, PLAXIS, FLAC or ABAQUS etc.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience of developing and implementing software tools to solve complex analytical / numerical problems in an efficient manner, i.e. using MATLAB, VBA and Python.
  • Ability to develop cost, time, resource estimates and project schedules for geotechnical scopes of work.
  • Ability to manage small packages of work to deliver specialist services to our Clients, sometimes within tight timeframes.
  • Working knowledge of finite element analysis techniques utilised in geotechnical design of offshore foundations structure (constitutive modelling, large diameter monopiles and suction caissions). Including implementation of 3D FEA in the design and analysis of large diameter monopile foundations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the delivery of projects to deliver optimum solutions, on time and to budget.
  • Attend regular internal meetings and external or third-party meetings as required.
  • Ensure deliverables are completed in full compliance with approved instructions, procedures and policies.
  • Liaison with internal and external project interfaces.
  • Occasional R&D projects and in-house software development.

Competencies & Soft Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal and technical skills with the confidence to liaise with clients.
  • Be self-motivated, well organised and a team player.
  • Excellent report writing skills with the ability to self-check and produce accurate work.
  • Working knowledge of engineering principles and practices coupled with the ability to select and apply standard guides, methods, and techniques.
  • Proficiency in Matlab and Visual Basic / Python is preferable.

Additional Information:

  • SLPE’s office is located in central London, and it is expected that some office-based working will be required for this role. However, a degree of remote and/or flexible working will be considered for the right candidate.
  • Travel to and from Northern Europe for short periods of time should be expected.
  • Flexible working attitude and availability to work outside normal hours if required.
