#OffshoreMentalHealth: Empowering Mental Health Responders and First Aiders

As part of our ongoing #OffshoreMentalHealth campaign, this month we are focusing on empowering employees to become Mental Health Responders and First Aiders in the workplace. At SLPE, we've taken significant steps to ensure that every team member is equipped with the knowledge and skills to support mental health and respond to mental health concerns effectively. Read on to learn how these initiatives can transform your workplace and promote a culture of care and safety.
At SLPE, we have made it a priority to offer training for every member of our team to become a qualified Mental Health Responder. With this training, employees have been awarded the FutureQuals Level 2 Award in Mental Health: Workplace Responder qualification. This qualification, designed and delivered by St John Ambulance, provides our staff with an in-depth understanding of mental health issues that can affect individuals at work. Through the course, they have learned about key policies and best practice frameworks for managing mental health in the workplace.
Training includes:
• Identifying signs of mental health issues
• Understanding the impact of mental health on work performance
• Implementing strategies to support colleagues facing mental health challenges
• Promoting a positive mental health culture within the workplace
In addition to Mental Health Responder training, we offer employees the chance to train as First Aiders. This training, also provided by St John Ambulance, conforms with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance. It provides a comprehensive set of practical skills needed by first aiders in the workplace, giving both the ability and knowledge to deal with first aid emergencies. The training ensures our team meets the standards required to comply with Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations.
Training includes:
• Assessing and managing incidents
• Providing basic life support
• Handling common workplace injuries and illnesses
• Maintaining first aid kits and records
We are proud to announce that every member of our team is now qualified, or will soon qualify, as a Mental Health Responder, and three staff members are trained as First Aiders.
Offering Mental Health Responder and First Aider training to all SLPE staff has greatly impacted our workplace. The initiative has been well received, fostering respect and understanding for mental health and raising awareness on how to address it. We encourage other offshore companies to adopt similar training to create a safer, more supportive environment for their teams.
